About the Interested Persons Register (IPR)

"Citizenship is the common ground that unites us as Western Australians and it is the essence of a truly inclusive dynamic society."
Can you tell the State Government what it's like to be:
  • Disabled?
  • An indigenous woman?
  • Culturally diverse?
  • A farmer?
  • A single parent?
  • A senior citizen?
  • A young person?

The Western Australian State Government is asking everyday people from all walks of life to be members of Government boards, to help shape government policy.

The Premier would like to have a greater diversity of people serving on boards and committees that advise the Government on issues affecting the community.

Women, indigenous people, culturally and linguistically diverse people, people with disabilities, young people and the aged are especially encouraged to apply for inclusion on the register.

Active citizenship is about public participation in decision-making. Encouraging and empowering Western Australians whatever their backgrounds to participate effectively, creatively and critically in community life must be a priority. Our community is made up of a diverse group of people. Looking at the world through the eyes of another, even for an instant, is a powerful experience.

Note: Some boards and committees require members to hold relevant qualifications and/or experience in specific areas.

Background

A register of persons interested in serving on Government boards and committees is maintained by the Department of the Premier and Cabinet. Ministers, Members of Parliament and the general public may submit names for inclusion on the Interested Persons Register.

Details recorded include name, sex, age, cultural background, qualifications, referees and areas of Government activity in which a person is interested. Ministers and agencies can match suitable applicants with impending vacancies on boards and committees. While there is no obligation for Ministers to nominate individuals from the Interested Persons Register, the Premier has asked Ministers and agencies to give the register a priority when searching for possible candidates. All appointments to Government boards and committees are subject to ratification by Cabinet.

The nomination is valid for five years.
